Update from Linda Oram, psychotherapist and hypnotherapist – August 2023

I use aspects of this wonderfully straight-forward therapy approach in almost all my sessions with clients.

How many of you have been given the ‘Pleasure Exercise’ or the “Worry Journal’ for ‘homework’? Which of you have seen the visual aids in my flip-chart: hormones and ways to boost our happy ones, Bodd and his emotions and feelings, how our brains scan constantly for emotional and physical danger?

This approach works just as well with my slightly more mature clients ones as it does for the younger ones that it was developed for, and I love the ‘lightbulb’ moments that clients get when they learn about why they feel the way they do.


As promised, I thought I’d give you some more information about this beautifully practical, common sense approach to emotional wellbeing.

The ‘Human Toolbox’, was founded by a psychotherapist called Lindy Wheeler, when she realised that ‘conventional’ counselling wasn’t working with the children and young people that she was working with. As she says “they needed to be drawn into a relationship, which they could trust, and they needed to know WHY they should talk about their painful feelings”. So after extensive research, she began to draw!

Using simple pictures and diagrams, and the lovely character ‘Bodd’, she explains how we all have the Tools within us to live our lives with “balance, peace and contentment”, and if we are struggling with mental illness, it is simply because we haven’t learnt to use our Human Toolbox yet.

I agree with Lindy that traditional counselling doesn’t work for everyone, which is why I use various other approaches with my clients that REALLY work and that provide explanations and solutions, instead of focusing on problems, and the Human Toolbox works so well, either as a stand alone eight week course or in combination with other therapy techniques. Although it was originally designed to be used with High school children (KS 3 and 4), it is so versatile that it can be used with ANY age.
